“LEAWOOD, KS (KCTV) –

Chances are you’ve heard the ads on the radio or even read about it online.

There’s a procedure that claims to literally freeze away the fat. It’s called CoolSculpting.

KCTV5 News was with Karen Lott as she was getting her second CoolSculpting treatment at the AesthetiCare Medspa in Leawood.

“I had the two pregnancies, so I had belly weight that just would not fall off,” explained Lott.

A cooling gel pad was placed on her belly, then a vacuum device attached. The operator warned her she would feel an intense suction and he wasn’t joking.

“It sucks the skin into metal plates, to protect your epidermis and dermis. Yet, it freezes the fat, so there’s not frost bite,” explained the spa’s president, Matt Taranto. “If you freeze a fat cell long enough, they die and die. You never create new fat cells after puberty. You are done.”

The science stems from a Harvard study which looked at how cold affects fat. That study claimed children who ate lots of popsicles developed dimples and had less fat in their cheats.

Taranto says he’s performed the now FDA approved treatment on hundreds of people in the metro. He showed us before and after pictures of his success stories.

Lott’s skin was sucked up and kept in the device for about an hour. She said it only initially hurt a little, then the area goes numb.

Once her body was released from the suction cup a “Z-Wave” treatment was done. For three minutes, 3,000 pulses of radial shockwaves moved along the treated area.

“By combining the two, results are 50% better than CoolSculpting on its own,” said Taranto.

But does it truly work or is the idea junk science?

Leawood plastic surgeon Dr. Keith Hodge says CoolSculpting can work but you have to be a good candidate.

“This is ideally for people with a reasonable diet and exercise program but have areas of excess they just can’t treat with their normal routine,” said Hodge.

Hodge points out, to get rid of large amounts of fat, your only options are diet and exercise or liposuction.

Unlike liposuction, there is no down time after your one hour treatment but it can take up to 12 weeks to see any results. You may also notice bruising and redness after a treatment.

The spa also recommends at least two treatments on the problem area. Each session costs around $800.

CoolSculpting says 425,000 sessions were performed last year alone. Nearly 25 percent of those were done on men.

KCTV5 reached out to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery to find out what the organization thought of the procedure. The President-elect Dr. Renato Saltz said, “It’s so exciting to finally have a safe, non-surgical alternative to liposuction that is totally non-invasive.””

Thanks for spending time with us, Carolyn!
