CoolSculpting 101: What is Cryolipolysis?

The kids are out of school, the sun is shining, and it’s the perfect time to head to the pool. But instead of hiding your amazing body under a cover up, imagine showing off the new, sculpted figure you’ve worked hard on!

If you’re thinking your body isn’t quite there yet, we may have your ultimate solution. We understand that going to the gym can be difficult right now, and every day we have to change our daily routine. Fortunately, Cryolipolysis is a body-shaping treatment that freezes away fat cells without harming the surrounding tissue, and you can get it done without being surrounded by hoards of people! While Cryolipolysis may sound like a big, scientific word, you’ve probably heard about CoolSculpting (it’s the same thing!).

Our body-sculpting experts at AesthetiCare make achieving your goals easier than ever. After performing countless CoolSculpting procedures for women and men in the Kansas City area, we’ve discovered the amazing benefits that come with non-invasive fat reduction.

Read on to learn more about how cryolipolysis works and what CoolSculpting can do for you.

You don’t actually burn away fat.

Cardio and lifting weights is a great way to get rid of excess fat, but despite the common phrase, you’re not burning fat cells. Instead, the fat cells you have simply shrink, which helps you look smaller and more toned.

We’ll explain.

Most doctors believe that we have every fat cell we will ever have at birth.  Some will argue that you can develop more fat cells during puberty, and also if you have extreme weight gain.  But for most people, you will never create another fat cell once you reach your late teens or early twenties.  As you gain weight, your body stores excess energy into your fat cells, causing them to expand.

Can working out target where I shrink my fat cells?

Unfortunately, you can’t target specific areas for fat loss through working out. So whenever you see any “miraculous” flat tummy teas or ab workouts, don’t believe that they’re magically going to give you results. The truth is, how your body reduces fat is based on genetics. Some people may shrink fat in their stomachs and thighs while holding onto fat on their arms. Others may have no problem toning their arms, but still have issues in the midsection area.

Fortunately, CoolSculpting can target and destroy fat cells (not just shrink), giving you the perfect companion to your regular workout and diet routine.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a branded version of cryolipolysis—a technique that uses freezing cold temperatures to kill fat cells. When you shrink fat cells through working out and/or eating in a caloric deficit, those cells can still expand if you begin eating too much food for prolonged periods of time. But with CoolSculpting, once fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good!

Even though CoolSculpting has only been around for the past eleven years, cryolipolysis has a longer history that goes back to the 70s! It all started with popsicles (yes, we’re being serious). In 1970, scientists noticed that children who ate popsicles lost more fat in their cheeks. Coined “popsicle panniculitis,” the phenomenon led to the discovery that lipid-rich fat cells were more susceptible to cold injuries than the water-rich cells that surround them.

As a result, professional cryolipolysis treatments like CoolSculpting can effectively target fat cells without freezing or harming the surrounding water-rich cells (such as your skin cells).

Since the device is so versatile, CoolSculpting can treat fat on areas such as your:

  • Chin
  • Love handles
  • Thighs
  • Muffin top
  • And more!

When your provider sets the device over the treatment area(s) it utilizes suction to pull excess fat into the handpiece for proper cooling. This suction technique ensures that fat cells don’t retreat deep under your skin’s surface after being introduced to freezing temperatures.

A built-in safety device monitors how cold your skin gets and will shut off if temperatures fall below a certain level. So if you’re wondering whether CoolSculpting is safe, then your answer is 100% yes!

Benefits of Cryolipolysis

Because we care so much about each person who comes into our office, we would never rave about a procedure if it didn’t work. We’ve dedicated our time to mastering the best techniques for CoolSculpting treatments, which is exactly why we believe it comes with benefits that could help almost anyone!

Safe and away from others

When you come to our office, we make sure you are safe and properly social distanced from others. During the treatment, you’ll have a room all to yourself, so you don’t have to worry about your health.

No anesthesia, no incisions, no downtime

CoolSculpting is an innovative fat-reducing treatment that doesn’t require you to go under the knife. Procedures like liposuction come with painful recovery times, and you’ll be forced to take off work. With CoolSculpting, you’re in and out of the office and can go back to your regular activities!

Targeted fat loss, real results

Remember what we said earlier—you cannot target your fat loss at the gym. Exercising can help tone muscles and reduce overall fat, but it’s genetics that decides where you lose the fat, not you (we know…not fair). However, with CoolSculpting’s innovative cryolipolysis technology, you can finally target stubborn fat that doesn’t seem to go away.

Long-lasting fat loss

Since CoolSculpting actually freezes and kills fat cells, the cells can’t resurrect themselves; they’re gone forever. In the following weeks after your procedure, your body will process and eliminate the dead fat cells. Plus, you can combine CoolSculpting with other procedures like Emsculpt or Cellfina to maximize your fat-loss results.

For people young, old, and anyone in between

All ages are welcome to enjoy the benefits of CoolSculpting. If you have a little excess fat you’re tired of looking at, then this non-invasive procedure could be your perfect solution! However, CoolSculpting doesn’t tighten loose skin, but you can always combine it with a SkinTyte procedure (also 100% non-invasive).

Goodbye, low self-esteem

No one wants to spend the summer hot and covered in layers of clothing, and with CoolSculpting you can finally pull out your favorite bathing suits, tank tops, and summer dresses with confidence. It’s time to be proud of your body, and CoolSculpting can give you a much needed self-esteem boost!

CoolSculpting frequently asked questions

Does CoolSculpting actually work?

Yes, CoolSculpting actually does work. We understand that there are a lot of random ads and promotions that claim to sculpt the body (some will even say within hours!), but that doesn’t mean everything is a scam. In fact, cryolipolysis is a science, not a made up, money-making gimmick.

To be 100% transparent, you may not notice results right away, but that’s because it takes time for the body to process the dead fat cells. At AesthetiCare, our CoolSculpting procedure eliminates up to 25% of fat cells in the treated area(s) with each treatment. You can see results as early as 30 days, with peak results at 120 days.

Note: You may need to come in for multiple sessions to maximize your results, and results vary from person to person.

Does CoolSculpting hurt?

Nope! For most people, CoolSculpting doesn’t hurt. Initially, you may feel some intense cold, but that feeling usually goes away within 5 to 10 minutes as the area numbs. You may also notice some pulling, tugging, or mild tingling sensations. Either way, you won’t experience any kind of intolerable pain.

What results can I expect?

Since CoolSculpting freezes fat cells, you can expect long-lasting, permanent body sculpting results after a cryolipolysis treatment series. As time passes, the treated area(s) will be more toned and noticeably slimmer, but for more stubborn areas, you may need multiple sessions to get the results you want.

Note: CoolSculpting may not be as beneficial for people with large amounts of excess fat. It works best for people who are close to their target weight and need help with stubborn fat.

Is CoolSculpting permanent?

Yes, CoolSculpting is permanent. Once fat cells are destroyed, there’s no way for them to come back. Keep in mind that the fat cells that are left can still grow, so you always want to maintain a healthy diet and workout regime.

Is reducing fat the same thing as losing weight?

While reducing fat and losing weight can work hand-in-hand, they are not necessarily the same thing. You can lose weight without losing fat (i.e. water weight). The scale may tell you you’re smaller, but the amount of fat on your body may say otherwise. On the other hand, fat reduction through cryolipolysis ensures that you get rid of fat. You’ll look smaller, even if the scale stays the same.

Can I do cryolipolysis at home?

You can try to do cryolipolysis at home, but it won’t work. A lot of DIY cryolipolysis options involve ice or other frozen materials. You may think that applying something super cold to your skin will do the same thing, but cryolipolysis isn’t that simple. Instead, you’re just freezing your skin… not your fat.

Plus, trying it at home could lead to frostbite, numbness, and even permanent tissue damage. Honestly, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. That way you get great results with little to no risk.
