BBL vs. Moxi: What’s the Difference and Which Is Better for You?

Author: Kathy Taranto

Two Powerful Tools for Modern Skin Rejuvenation

Laser skin rejuvenation has advanced rapidly in the last decade; two of the most requested treatments by our patients at AesthetiCare are BBL (BroadBand Light) and Moxi. While both are non-invasive and deliver powerful results, they serve different purposes, use different technologies, and suit different skin goals.

If you’re trying to choose between BBL and Moxi, understanding how each works and when to use them is key to making the right decision for your skin.

What Is BBL?

BBL, or BroadBand Light, is an advanced form of intense pulsed light (IPL) that uses broad-spectrum light energy to target pigmentation, redness, and signs of aging at the skin’s surface and below.

How It Works:

BBL delivers rapid pulses of high-intensity light into the skin; these pulses are absorbed by pigments like melanin and hemoglobin, which are then broken down and naturally cleared by the body. This reduces age spots, redness, and sun damage while stimulating collagen production.

Best For:

  • Sun damage and hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots and freckles
  • Rosacea and redness
  • Uneven tone and mild texture issues

BBL is particularly effective for patients with fair to medium skin tones, and those looking to correct visible signs of aging without downtime.

What Is Moxi?

Moxi is a non-ablative fractional laser developed to rejuvenate and refresh the skin without significant recovery time. It’s part of a new generation of gentle resurfacing lasers that stimulate collagen and target early signs of aging or skin dullness.

How It Works:

Moxi delivers controlled laser energy in tiny microzones beneath the skin’s surface; this stimulates a natural healing response while leaving surrounding tissue intact. The treatment improves skin texture, reduces pore size, evens pigment, and boosts overall radiance.

Best For:

  • Early signs of aging
  • Preventative skin maintenance
  • Melasma and uneven pigmentation
  • All skin tones, including melanin-rich skin

Because it’s so gentle, Moxi is often called a “prejuvenation” tool; it’s ideal for younger patients or those starting their anti-aging routine. However, it’s also excellent for older clients seeking a refresh, particularly when concerned with pigment and texture. Moxi serves as a versatile skin polisher for all ages.

When to Choose BBL

BBL is ideal for those who already show signs of sun damage; if you have visible discoloration, broken capillaries, or age spots, this is the gold-standard option. Patients often report more even skin tone and improved clarity within days, and over time, the treatment actually helps retrain skin cells to behave more youthfully.

It’s also an excellent choice for rosacea sufferers, since BBL targets the vascular component contributing to persistent redness.

Recommended Treatment Plan:

  • Start with 3-5 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart
  • Maintain results with annual touch-ups
  • Combine with daily SPF and pigment-targeting skincare

When to Choose Moxi

Moxi is your go-to if your concerns are more about skin texture, dullness, or early pigment changes; it’s also safe for melasma, which traditional light-based therapies can sometimes worsen.

You might also choose Moxi if you have melanin-rich skin; it’s designed to be inclusive and gentle enough without triggering post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Recommended Treatment Plan:

  • Start with 2 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart
  • Maintenance every 6-12 months, depending on goals
  • Pair with antioxidant serums and hydration boosters

Can You Combine BBL and Moxi?

Absolutely. In fact, many of our patients at AesthetiCare use BBL and Moxi together as part of a complete skin renewal strategy. BBL addresses surface pigment and redness, while Moxi goes deeper to improve texture and stimulate collagen. This combination delivers a radiant, smooth, and even complexion over time.

Clinics often perform combination treatments the same day or alternate the two treatments across a few months for optimal results, especially for patients seeking major improvements in skin quality with minimal downtime.

Who Should Avoid BBL or Moxi?

Both treatments are safe when used correctly, but there are a few considerations.

Avoid BBL If:

  • You have melanin-rich skin  (Fitzpatrick V; VI); higher risk of pigmentation changes
  • You’ve recently been tanning.  You can resume treatment 3 weeks post sun exposure
  • You’ve recently applied self-tanner.  You can resume treatment 1 week post-application
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding (as a precaution)

Avoid Moxi If:

  • You have an active infection
  • You’ve had recent facial surgery or aggressive peels
  • You’re not able to tolerate  mild heat or redness post-treatment

Downtime: What to Expect from Each Treatment

One of the best things about both BBL and Moxi is how minimal the downtime is compared to more invasive procedures.

  • BBL: Mild redness and warmth immediately after; pigmented spots may darken before lightening in 5-7 days on the face and up to 4 weeks on the body.
  • Moxi: Slight redness and dryness; skin may feel rough or “sandpapery” 4-5 days before glowing results appear

You can typically resume normal activities right away; just avoid excessive sweating, direct sun exposure, harsh exfoliants, and unprotected skin in the days following treatment.

Long-Term Benefits: Why These Treatments Are Worth It

BBL and Moxi help your skin age better over time. Studies show that regular BBL treatments can reverse genetic aging markers in the skin, while Moxi improves collagen density and skin clarity after just a few sessions.

Together or separately, they support:

  • Improved tone and texture
  • Reduced pigmentation and redness
  • Fewer fine lines and signs of aging
  • Healthier, more youthful-looking skin

Choosing the Right Treatment for You

When it comes to BBL vs. Moxi, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer; the best choice depends on your skin type, tone, concerns, and long-term goals.

Choose BBL if:

  • You want to correct visible sun damage or redness
  • You’re fair to medium; toned with age spots or vascular issues
  • You want long-term term healthy skin

Choose Moxi if:

  • You want to prevent aging or improve dull skin
  • You have melasma
  • You have melanin-rich skin
  • You’re new to laser treatments and want a gentle entry point

For the most dramatic, lasting results, consider pairing both in a personalized skin plan.
