A Closer Look at Oily Skin | Skin Experts in Kansas City

Oily skin represents one end of the skin type spectrum. Keep reading to break free from common misconceptions about how to treat oily skin and achieve a healthy glow

What makes your skin look and feel oily?

Oily skin is caused by a build-up of oil, or sebum, on the surface of the skin. Your sebaceous glands are in charge of this production, and while a healthy amount of oil on the skin or hair is natural, sometimes we need to keep it in check.

Oily skin usually appears shiny, affects the longevity of your makeup, and makes you more prone to issues like acne breakouts and clogged pores. Excess oil production is most common in the T-zone (across the forehead and down the nose and chin). Many people who struggle with oil in their T-zones struggle with dryness on other areas of the face, making them more of a combination skin type

While dry skin is sometimes a result of other factors that need treatment of their own, oily skin is most often simply genetic. But don’t fear! We have all the tips and tricks to teach you how to treat oily skin both at home and in our office

How to take care of your oily skin

One of the biggest misconceptions about how to treat oily skin is that you don’t need to moisturize since you naturally produce more oil. But don’t be fooled! Hydrating your skin is important to every skin type, including oily skin You should still moisturize your oily skin to help balance out its hydration levels. Using hydrating products with ingredients like hyaluronic or glycolic acid can also help to prevent acne breakouts and excess oil buildup that causes them.

For oily skin types, it’s important to cleanse your face morning and night with a gentle cleanser to keep oil production in check. For extreme oil, you might even consider a method called the double cleanse. Think of it like lather, rinse, repeat, but for your skin!

Use aesthetics to combat oily skin

Aesthetic treatments like facials and peels can produce stunning results for oily skin types by removing excess oil and treating the effects of oil buildup.

Chemical peel

Chemical peels are a great restorative and rejuvenating treatment to give the skin a fresh start. Most chemical peels target skin imperfections like fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne. However, they are also a perfect way to refresh oily skin by removing dead cells and buildup in your pores caused by excess oil, revealing a more youthful and vibrant you!

Hydrafacial

The Hydrafacial is the perfect refreshing treatment for oily skin types! The Hydrafacial treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums. The treatment is soothing, rejuvenating, non-irritating, and immediately effective. A Hydrafacial is the perfect way to combine exfoliating and moisturizing, two of our favorite non-irritating methods to rehydrate the skin in a healthy way.
