Working similarly to a statin medication, red yeast rice has been shown to lower LDL by as much as 15-34%, similar to the effect of a low-dose statin but generally better tolerated. Red yeast rice may also reduce total cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Because the same enzymes involved in cholesterol synthesis are also involved in the synthesis of CoQ10, it is important to replace CoQ10, a natural antioxidant, when taking red yeast rice.
