Searching for “Skin Care Near Me”? Our Guide to the Best Medical-Grade Skin Products

Good skin care has so many benefits for how you feel on the inside and look on the outside. You can use your skin care routine to prevent signs of aging, treat acne, as a self-care moment in your day, and just something that makes you feel good. While these are all amazing reasons to add skin care into your life, it can be a little overwhelming to learn more about skin care products in depth.

No worries, your local skin experts are here! (Our site isn’t named GreatSkinKC.com for nothing ) Today the skin professionals at AesthetiCare Leawood and Liberty are going over types of products for skin care near you, including what they’re good for and why you want them in your routine.

If you’re just starting out, less is more

“Less is more” is a great rule to apply when you’re searching for skin care near you. You don’t have to have a complicated routine to get significant results. (Another tip: If your skin isn’t used to a complicated / multi-step routine, you might have a reaction.)

When we mean less is more, we are talking about four basic steps to take care of skin. This typically includes:

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Nourishing Product
  • Sunscreen

These 4 skincare products are the foundation for most skincare regimens. If you want to graduate to a more in-depth skin care, we suggest trying out masks and serums for relaxing at-home skin treatments.

Skin Care Near You: Types of Skincare Products

We list the following product types in the order that you should apply them

Cleanser

Cleanser is a skincare product specifically formulated to wash away daily irritants. Just like washing your hands often, it’s important to wash your face. Environmental stuff like dirt, pollen, fumes, and other outdoor irritants can wreak havoc on your skin.

Touching your face throughout your day can also transfer dirt and germs from objects like your phone, keyboard, and steering wheel onto your skin!

All of this is to say, your daily cleanse is super important If you’re more acne prone, we recommend washing morning and night. If your skin is more dry and/or easygoing, washing once per day at night may suffice. (If you’re only washing your face once a day, do it at night because you wash away any irritants from your day.)

Along with daily cleansing, we recommend cleaning things your face comes into contact with often, like your pillowcases, phone screen, and eyeglasses.

Toner

The role of toner in a skincare routine is to provide a deeper clean after you wash your face. It is also known as a “double cleanse.” Toner works to get rid of remaining dirt, oil or makeup, and also balances your skin’s pH to provide a clearer, healthier complexion.

Toner is a bit controversial in the world of skin care Some people don’t use it, while others swear by it. Our take on toner? If you find it works for you, use it! We find it’s especially beneficial for those with oily or acne prone skin.

Spot Treatment

Spot treatment refers to a product you only use on certain spots to help treat active acne. It is super useful and versatile because you only use as much as you need to, when and where you need it. For example, some people only get breakouts when they’re more stressed or during certain times of the month, so having a spot treatment on hand is convenient.

Spot treatments typically use ingredients that kill bacteria, unclog pores, and get rid of dead skin cells. For most people’s routines, it’s easiest for them to use an acne spot treatment overnight so they can wash it off in the morning before heading out for their day.

Moisturizer

A good moisturizer is an essential part of anyone’s skin routine. Moisturizers come in different levels of moisture, like quick-drying gels or ultra-rich creams.

Moisturizer is super important for helping prevent fine lines and wrinkles. When your skin is hydrated, it’s more plump and radiant. Dehydrated skin can look more “prune-y” and less supple. Moisturizer can also give an extra glow and is a great canvas for makeup to prep the skin.

Tip: We like to switch to lighter moisturizers in the spring and summer, when there is more humidity in the air and our skin is less dry. In the winter, we like to go for deep-moisturizing products to make up for the dry winter air.

You can use a moisturizer after you cleanse and/or tone your skin. If your skin feels “tight” from cleansing, moisturizer will fix it!

The key to good skin: sunscreen

If you’re going to care for your skin, sunscreen is non-negotiable! It’s the EASIEST way to prevent signs of aging, like sun damage, lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. You should apply SPF every day during every season, no matter if you’re staying inside or going out—sunlight gets through windows!

We lecture about sunscreen for good reason: UVA and UVB light can cause premature aging and skin cancer. It’s incredibly important that you protect your face and body skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and re-apply every 2 hours. We also recommend SPF clothing and hats for extra protection!

Optional add-on products:

Now that you know a bit about the “why” behind these foundational skin care products, let’s talk about some of our favorite ways to boost your at-home skin care!

Face masks

Skincare masks are an amazing way to benefit your skin and also to take some time to relax. There are skincare treatment masks for everything—anti-aging, collagen-boosting, brightening, hydrating, you name it.

The best skincare masks have good ingredients. If you’re looking to treat acne, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are ingredients to look for. For hyperpigmentation and dark spots, find a mask with Vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid is a fantastic ingredient for hydration; other powerhouse ingredients include antioxidants and ceramides.

Ingredients to stay away from: fragrance, alcohol, dyes, parabens, and essential oils can all irritate and dry out your skin.

You can use a face mask twice or more a week when you feel like your skin needs a little extra love. If you have multiple concerns, you can also multi-mask! You can multi-mask by using one mask in an area like your forehead for one concern and another mask over the cheeks and chin for another! Follow the directions given for each mask; the amount of time you leave them on can range anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour.

Face masks also come in a wide variety of forms and formulas, like sheet masks, gel, clay, and more. These are a great way to experiment with your skin care and add in a little self-care throughout your week

Serums & Creams

If you’re looking to graduate from a skincare novice to a certified skincare geek, serums are for you Serums are products with specific active ingredients to target certain skin concerns. They can be for hydration, anti-aging, brightening, dark spots, and so much more.

Serums can be tricky to know how to incorporate in your routine and which products are okay to mix with others. Our skin professionals can help you create the perfect routine during your free skin consultation!

Creams are usually overnight skincare treatments designed to be ultra-nourishing. Most creams are for concerns like anti-aging, since they are working to boost your skin’s hydration to soften lines and wrinkles.

Retinol

Retinol is an amazing anti-aging preventative product. Retinol works to help your skin regenerate because it makes your skin produce more collagen, renewing your skin from within.

Retinol almost always has a learning curve to using it. You should start small and only use it 2 to 3 times a week while your skin acclimates. You can gradually work up to using it every night or every other night. It also makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s important to wear sunscreen while using retinol!

There are many types and strengths of retinol, and we can help you find the best one for your unique skin and concerns. Overall, retinol is an amazing product for anti-aging and renewal of your skin ✨
