How Does Emsculpt Work? A Definitive Guide

Targeting specific muscles to strengthen and tone is one of the hardest things to pinpoint with exercise alone. Maybe you’ve worked hard in the gym, but you find the abdomen, glutes, or other areas difficult to refine and improve. Our Emsculpt body sculpting treatment can help get you where you want to be!

But how does Emsculpt work? Today our AesthetiCare professionals are discussing everything you need to know about Emsculpt. We’ll tell you what it is, how it works, our procedure process, and more.

At AesthetiCare, it’s our goal and passion to help others learn about all of the possibilities with aesthetic treatments! Emsculpt is one of our favorite body contouring options to refine and tone your figure. As the best in the biz serving clients in Kansas City, Leawood, Liberty, and North KC, we’re here to discuss everything about this revolutionary body sculpting treatment!

What is Emsculpt?

Emsculpt is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive body sculpting procedure designed to shape and tone muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, arms, and legs. On the stomach, Emsculpt works to destroy fat and add muscle volume and strength. On the glutes and other muscles, Emsculpt’s primary goal is to build muscle, resulting in a lifted shape!

Emsculpt can treat five total areas of the body:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Calves
  • Thighs

How Emsculpt Works

It’s actually really cool! Emsculpt works by using a high-intensity electromagnetic technology. With this technology, Emsculpt creates supramaximal contractions. These contractions improve the tone and strength of your muscles and are unachievable through regular exercise. Each 30-minute Emsculpt treatment is equivalent to 20,000 contractions! Studies show an average of 16% increase in muscle mass with Emsculpt treatments.

The Benefits of Emsculpt

Increased Strength

The focal point of Emsculpt is the muscles. This revolutionary technology creates muscle contractions that use ALL of your muscles in the treatment area. This is impossible with voluntary exercise, so Emsculpt is a total #LifeHack to quickly increase your strength.

30 minutes of Emsculpt is the equivalent of 20,000 sit-ups in the abdomen or 20,000 lunges in the buttocks. Another benefit of increasing strength in your abdomen is how much it can impact the rest of your body! A strong core can potentially improve lower back pain and overall balance.

Toned Muscles

Who doesn’t love to look more fit? With muscle strength comes tone, and Emsculpt’s treatment will tone your muscles as it strengthens them. This creates a more refined abdomen, lifted buttocks, and sculpted arms and legs

Decreased Body Fat

A lovely byproduct of strengthening and toning your muscles is fat reduction. While not as dramatic as CoolSculpting, which is specifically designed for fat reduction, Emsculpt can help shed unwanted fat in the treatment area on an average of 19%.

Zero Downtime

This non-surgical body sculpting procedure requires no downtime. Treatment time is 30 minutes and is easy to fit into your busy schedule. There is no amount of recovery time where you need to rest; you can immediately get back to your routine!

Emsculpt Treatment Process

Our process at AesthetiCare always includes a consultation before any procedure. Below we discuss the general Emsculpt treatment process, as well as its outcomes!

Complimentary Consultation

With any of our treatments at AesthetiCare, you will get a free consultation with a specialist to discuss your goals for treatment. We’ll talk about your specific concerns, as well as answer any questions you may have before we work together to decide an individualized treatment plan for you. We typically recommend 4 to 6 treatments 2 to 5 days apart.

Body Assessment

On the day of your first Emsculpt treatment, we’ll perform a thorough body assessment that includes photography and a body composition report. This helps us better assess your results post treatment. All articles of clothing or jewelry that contain metal must be removed prior to treatment.

Emsculpt Treatment Appointment

First, we’ll make sure that you’re relaxed and comfortable on the treatment table before we begin. You’ll either lay face up or face down, depending on the treatment area. Our Emsculpt specialist will then place the Emsculpt panels on dry, clean, and bare skin, which are held in place with an elastic strap.

Next, the specialist will start the treatment at a lower setting so that you can get used to the sensation. Clients report that this just feels like a mild pulling and is not uncomfortable. As some time passes, the intensity percentage is increased to your tolerance. It should never be painful! Each treatment is customized to the client, and some may get to 100% intensity while others may not. Either is totally fine.

Below, AesthetiCare owners Matt and Kathy Taranto demonstrate the Emsculpt procedure in action. They discuss how Emsculpt works, what it feels like, and the results after treatment.

What to Expect After Your Emsculpt Treatment

You’ll see optimal Emsculpt results 2 to 4 weeks after your treatments. Clients report feeling increased strength in the treatment area after their first treatment! You may find sit-ups or crunches a bit easier when you go to the gym, or that your pants are a little easier to button. Increased strength and better fitting clothes are two main outcomes of this body sculpting procedure.

Clients see great results when we do a series of 6 treatments,  2 treatments a week for 3 weeks. Your results can be maintained through a healthy diet and exercise, but many clients choose to do maintenance treatments as well because they love their Emsculpt results so much! Some clients choose to do Emsculpt once every month, or every 2 to 3 months for maintenance.. It all depends on you and your unique goals!

Emsculpt Before and After Results

Emsculpt FAQs

How long do Emsculpt results last?

As with anything that strengthens your muscles, the results must be maintained to remain permanent. Emsculpt results last months along with a healthy diet and lifestyle. That being said, many clients decide to routinely have Emsculpt treatments done monthly, or every 2 to 3 months, since you cannot fully replicate Emsculpt’s results in the gym alone. You’ve got to use those muscles to keep ‘em!

Can I exercise after Emsculpt?

Yes! You can exercise after Emsculpt. There is no downtime required after your treatment; you’re welcome to head to the gym afterward as long as you’re feeling comfortable. You may even notice increased strength soon after your Emsculpt treatment session, which can make certain exercises easier to complete. That is one of the biggest benefits of Emsculpt treatment.

Is Emsculpt painful?

No, Emsculpt should never be painful. Emsculpt was created with many intensity settings to prevent pain. Your Emsculpt specialist will start with lower intensities to get you used to the sensation of the treatment, and then up the intensity as long as it remains comfortable for you.

Will Emsculpt tighten loose skin?

While tightening skin is a potential benefit of Emsculpt treatment, it is not Emsculpt’s main purpose. However, we do offer SkinTyte to treat this specific skin concern!

Which is better, Emsculpt or CoolSculpting?

We wouldn’t say that one is better than the other overall. What matters is you and your goals! Emsculpt is designed specifically to tone and strengthen muscles, while CoolSculpting is designed to reduce fat cells. For more information, check out our previous blog post on Emsculpt vs. CoolSculpting.

Who is a good candidate for Emsculpt?

Anyone looking to increase their muscle strength or tone in the abdomen, buttocks, arms, or legs is a good candidate for Emsculpt! We do not recommend Emsculpt as a replacement for a good diet and exercise. Instead, Emsculpt should be seen as an extra boost to your fitness habits. You can try out our instant virtual consultation tool to see if you’re a good Emsculpt candidate.

How many Emsculpt sessions do I need?

This all depends on your goals and what areas you want treated with Emsculpt. During your complimentary Emsculpt consultation, an AesthetiCare specialist will give you an estimate of how many Emsculpt sessions you need. The number of Emsculpt sessions you need is determined by your result goals and treatment area analysis.

Krissy is thorough and easy to talk to. She is confident in her skills and put me at ease.

Jessica is always keeping me up to date on new and exciting treatments. Although I have done multiple Intracel treatments in the past, this time she encouraged me to add on PRP. I highly recommend. Healing time was so fast!

Jessica did a great job always checking with me on how I was feeling. She was always concerned about how I was doing and doing the best job she could!

Jennifer explained everything in details and was very diligent in making sure that the procedure and follow up went well

I was given the proper guidance and steps to take to make my skin better. I truly love the honesty, care, and time taken to help find solutions to make my skin better. The before and after pictures truly show a difference on how well the procedure works. And I’m still noticing differences as my skin continues to heal.
