Have you noticed yourself going to great lengths to cover up your legs during the summer? Thanks to spider veins, many people feel extra self-conscious about showing their legs. The good news is you do not have to suffer with the red or blue veins that have popped up on your legs.
At AesthetiCare, we are proud to be Kansas City’s premier medical spa. We offer dozens of treatments, including our sclerotherapy spider vein treatment, to help our clients achieve gorgeous skin they can show off and feel proud of.
Below, we explain spider veins, their causes, and our amazing spider vein treatment using sclerotherapy.
What is a spider vein?
Superficial leg veins, sometimes called “spider veins” occur when tiny veins congregate below the surface of the skin, causing red, blue or purple discolorations. Spider veins get their name from the shape of the discolorations.
Some cases of spider veins can be quite small. Others are more noticeable. They may make you feel self-conscious in shorts, swimwear or birthday suits! Spider veins are usually harmless and any treatment is usually done for cosmetic reasons only.
Spider veins are most common on the thighs, ankles and calves. It’s estimated that twice as many women experience spider veins than men.
Causes of spider veins
Spider veins are not completely understood yet. We know that spider veins occur when the larger vein’s valves stop closing properly. The blood leaks back into the smaller associated veins, creating pressure that causes the vein to grow larger and discolored.
Spider veins most commonly occur in the legs because the veins in your legs must carry blood to your heart against gravity and for the longest distance. Tiny blood vessels bursting in the face results in facial spider veins.
Factors that correlate with spider veins include:
• Genetics – if family members experience spider veins, you are much more likely to have them, too
• Sitting or standing for long periods of time (think nurses or office jobs)
• Sun exposure
• Hormonal birth control or hormone replacement therapy
• Age
• Weight gain or obesity
• A history of blood clots
• Leg injuries
• Excess pressure in the face (from forceful coughing, sneezing, or vomiting)
What spider vein treatment does AesthetiCare offer?
At AesthetiCare, we offer the most historically effective spider vein treatment, sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a procedure that has been used since the 1930s and involves using a tiny needle to inject an FDA-approved solution (called “sclerosing agents”) into spider veins.
The solution causes the walls of the bothersome veins to swell, stick together, and seal shut. The spider vein then becomes scar tissue, think “scab” under the skin, and will be reabsorbed as waste by the body. Most clients see the treated veins disappear over six weeks to six months, depending on how quickly their body disposes of the waste tissue.
The best candidates for sclerotherapy spider vein treatments are generally healthy adults who have not had blood clotting issues in the past and have not given birth or been pregnant in the last 3 months. Adults who do not suffer from uncontrolled migraines, have severe debilitating heart murmurs and or severe allergies requiring the use of an Epi-pen, and those clients who are not currently taking the medication Tomoxifin.
What areas can AesthetiCare treat with sclerotherapy?
With our sclerotherapy spider vein treatment, we can collapse spider veins on your:
• Thighs
• Calves
• Ankles
• Feet
• Face
• Other areas of the body such as breast, chest, arms, shoulders, and back

What to expect when you come to AesthetiCare for your spider vein treatment in Kansas City
Consultation
All clients at AesthetiCare must first consult with our team so we understand their goals and concerns and to ensure they make a fully informed decision for their health. We will evaluate your general health, examine your spider veins, and discuss your options to create a customized treatment plan for you.
At your consultation, an RN, BSN will examine your veins to ensure sclerotherapy is the right treatment for you. If we believe your spider veins require the attention of your physician or an ultrasound before proceeding with treatment, we will let you know!
Pre-Treatment
When we schedule your appointment for your spider vein treatment in Kansas City at AesthetiCare, we will provide you with pre-treatment instructions important to follow.
Generally, we ask that you:
• Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications like Advil, ibuprofen, or aspirin for at least a week.
• Bring or wear comfortable shorts to wear during the treatment and loose-fitting pants to wear home. Disposable shorts are also available on site for your use during treatment if needed.
• Aestheticare is stocked with the highest quality of medical grade compression hose available for purchase. Upon assessment of your condition, your nurse will determine if compression is deemed necessary. If so, your nurse will fit you with the appropriate size of compression hose.
During Treatment
On the day of your appointment, we will make sure you are comfortably laying down before beginning. First, a comprehensive set of photos will be taken of all areas to be treated, then we will cleanse the treatment areas. Then, we will use a thin needle to deliver the solution into the appropriate veins.
The number of injections we perform will depend on the number and size of veins we are treating. The average treatment time is 30 minutes but depending on the extent of veins present, the treatment time can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 60 minutes.
Post-Treatment
We will provide you with important post-treatment instructions to ensure you get the best results from your spider vein treatment.
We ask that you:
• If compression hose are necessary we will ask that you wear them, day time only, for approximately 3 days.
• Avoid strenuous cardio workouts, or use of leg weights for at least 5 days
• Avoid hot tubs, saunas, warm baths, and sun exposure for at least 3 days
Is sclerotherapy painful? Do I need to plan for recovery?
Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated with no anesthesia. During injections, clients report feeling mild burning, or stinging that subsides usually in about 30 minutes after we have treated the vein.
There is no required downtime with sclerotherapy. If you do not feel any lingering discomfort or soreness in your legs, you can go back to work or continue your daily activities after leaving our office. In fact, we encourage normal activities the same day to promote circulation and healing.
Immediately after a treatment, you will experience red swollen bumps resembling bug bites lasting for 30 minutes to an hour. These raised areas will likely be itchy, the itchiness will resolve over the course of the day and should be completely gone in three to four hours post treatment.
Over the course of the following week some of the treated veins will slowly darken and depending on the size of the vein may even feel slightly “rope like” and feel tender to the touch. Some of the treated veins will appear to have not changed at all. This is common—the solution was introduced to the vein and is working on a cellular level.
Visible differences may not be present for several weeks. It is best to plan for a period of time to actually look worse than before treatment as the treated veins darken, they are often more noticeable than before treatment began. This is a normal and expected progression of treatment.
How often to return to AesthetiCare for spider vein treatments
Spider vein treatments are scheduled a week to two weeks apart. During each visit your nurse will determine which veins are fully closed and therefore no longer viable and which ones need treated again.
Most clients will need 4 to 5 treatments to fully resolve the veins that are of concern. Repeated exposure to the sclerosant will ensure the best results. Effectively treated veins collapse, die, and are eliminated naturally by your body. However, new spider veins could appear in the future, making a maintenance plan essential.
Is there any way to prevent new spider veins?
There is no sure way to avoid dilation of your blood vessels that causes the appearance of spider veins. However, some key changes in lifestyle and prevention methods may make a difference. Improve circulation. Having a healthy blood circulation is key to preventing and fighting the appearance of spider veins, especially in the legs.
Relieve pressure.
Excess pressure makes it difficult for your leg veins to deliver blood back to your heart. To relieve this pressure, keep your weight manageable and avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.
Do not cross your legs or sit on them, and take a walk every 30 to 60 minutes to keep pressure down. Avoid tight clothing that can restrict blood flow and cause pressure buildup (We’re looking at you, skinny jeans )
Compression stockings are your friend.
If you must sit or stand for long periods, we recommend compression stockings or socks. Compression garments put pressure on the veins, relieving swelling and improving blood flow.
Protect yourself from the sun.
UV light from the sun damages the skin and causes broken blood vessels and spider veins to appear on the face. Everyone, especially our fair-skinned ladies and gentlemen, need to wear a minimum of SPF 30 daily to prevent the formation of spider veins on the cheeks or nose.
Kick your feet back & relax.
Do your veins a favor and get in the habit of elevating your legs when sitting or laying down. This allows the blood to flow from your legs to your heart easier and prevents blood from pooling in the legs.
