Everything Botox: What Botox Is, What Botox Does & What Botox Treats

Have you ever heard the word Botox and thought, What the heck is that?!

All your friends are raving about it, so it must be good, right?

Would you have ever thought Botox was a cosmetic treatment? You wouldn’t know it from the name, but that’s in fact what it is!

Botox is the most effective cosmetic treatment in the world for temporarily improving the look of wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions, and it’s a popular treatment offered by AesthetiCare MedSpa in Kansas City.

Want to learn more about what Botox is, what it treats and what getting Botox is like at AesthetiCare? Let’s go on a deep dive into the world of Botox with the help of our fabulous nurses Blake and Judy, shall we?!

What Is Botox Made From?

Do you know what the #1 most popular cosmetic treatment in the world is?

I’ll give you one guess. Botox!

As we age, there’s one thing that slowly creeps up on us until one uneventful day, you wake up, look in the mirror and there they are – wrinkles.

Wrinkles are totally natural, but what if you don’t want to live with them? Does Botox get rid of wrinkles?

While Botox doesn’t permanently get rid of wrinkles created by facial expressions, the results are radical and can last up to three to four months!

Now, let’s get to that burning question: What is Botox made from?

Botox is made from purified neuromodulator proteins derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Ironically, C. botulinum can cause a type of life-threatening food poisoning called botulism, but in small, purified doses, we get Botox!

Isn’t that fascinating?!

Blake Bryant, one of our gifted nurses, describes in further detail how Botox was created in the following short video:

What Does Botox Do?

If you’re wondering how to get rid of wrinkles, then you are not alone. The struggle can be real, but fortunately, Botox treatment relaxes facial muscles, which in turn masks the look of wrinkles and fine lines on your skin.

Our nurse Blake describes this in more detail in the video below:

How does Botox work? After the purified proteins (the main ingredient in Botox) are injected, the nerve signals that direct facial muscles to contract during repeated facial expressions like frowning, smiling and squinting become blocked.

Blake best describes the process of Botox in this short video below:

Because the muscles are prevented from contracting, the lines, folds and wrinkles on the skin’s surface are prevented from forming.

Botox can treat the following areas:

  • Frown lines
  • Lip lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Marionette lines
  • Bunny lines
  • Pebble chin

Check out this video of one of our talented nurses, Judy Ribbey, discussing what Botox treatment is and visually demonstrating the areas of the skin that can be treated with Botox.

The procedure time varies between 15 and 30 minutes per treatment, and aside from some light swelling and potential bruising, results can be seen in as quickly as three to seven days and last up to four months.

Botox Frequently Asked Questions

As with any cosmetic treatment, I’m sure you have some questions, right?

Let’s look together at some frequently asked questions about the #1 most popular cosmetic treatment in the world known as Botox, shall we?

  1. How much research has gone into Botox treatment?

Considering its origin, wanting to know more about the research that went into developing Botox is a legitimate question. According to Botoxcosmetic.com, over 16 years of studies have been conducted and published on Botox, and its safety and efficacy have been reviewed in over 528 medical journals and scientific articles. All confirm Botox to be a safe and efficient cosmetic treatment.

  1. Does a substitute for Botox treatment exist?

The strength of Botox is measured solely in scientifically defined units, so while there are other neurotoxins on the market, none can claim the same level of safety and effectiveness as the FDA-approved Botox treatment that we have today. In addition to traditional Botox, AesthetiCare also offers Dysport, a similar neurotoxin product that comes from Europe.

  1. Will Botox treatment make me look unnatural or funny-looking?

This is a commonly asked question – sometimes the media paints Botox in a bad light. One thing to understand about Botox treatment is that it is technique sensitive. In other words, you shouldn’t get Botox every week or overdo it. Botox should be subtle to the point where it should always look natural. That’s why consulting with a medical professional is paramount in your Botox journey, because in doing so, you ensure that you’re receiving the appropriate amount of Botox every time.

The horror stories you hear about celebrities having botched Botox can be totally avoided by simply consulting with a licensed medical professional. It’s important to note, however, that even botched Botox isn’t permanent, since the effects eventually wear off.

*First-time AesthetiCare clients are offered a two-week touchup appointment so that they may be conservative initially until they assess their Botox results.

  1. Is Botox treatment painful?

Nobody likes being in pain, am I right? According to Botoxcosmetic.com, some patients have reported the Botox injection as feeling like a pinch – similar to having blood drawn. Topical numbing agents are available, but typically not even needed because the pain is so minimal. However, you can discuss this openly with your medical professional to determine the best course of action for your Botox treatment.

  1. At what age should I consider getting Botox treatment?

The best treatment for facial wrinkles is indeed Botox, but as far as a certain age for when to get treatment, the answer is … there is no particular age! Always consult a medical professional before getting Botox treatment, but even millennials are beginning to use Botox as a preventive measure to keep those wrinkles and fine lines at bay.
